Interactive lesson “How to distinguish between fake and truth in the media” (for the 10-11th grades)
For high school students (the 10-11th grades) and for first-year university students.
Duration - 45 min.
The purpose of this lesson is to form a responsible public attitude towards the disclosure of information about injustice and gross violation of human rights. The lesson has interactive form and consists of two exercises and a movie showcase. Students work with primary historical documents and media texts while performing their tasks. Thus, the participants learn to read thoroughly, analyse historical materials what fosters the formation of personal attitudes towards history and its better understanding.
During the class, students are offered to watch the educational film “Covering the Holodomor: Memory Eternal” with further discussion. The film focuses on the issue of media responsibility in covering and concealing human rights violations. The history of the Holodomor, as a lesson in history, tells us how the murder of 7 million Ukrainians was unnoticed in the world in the 1930s, and in the next 50 years, as a result of official denials and journalistic lies.
The objectives of this interactive lesson are:
To teach to decode propaganda in media texts;
To teach to understand the function of mass media in a democratic society and the value of freedom of speech;
To teach to understand our own responsibility for indifference to a crime or injustice and to understand our own role in the disclosure of human rights violations through freedom of speech.
The lesson was developed by the National Museum “Holodomor Victims Memorial” using the materials of the museum and a manual for teachers “Media literacy in social classes”.

The cost of an interactive lesson is for a group of up to 12 people 160 UAH, for a group from 13 to 20 people - 230 UAH.. Also, the cost of entrance tickets to the museum is paid additionally.
