According to the order of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine "On changing the name of the National Museum ‘Holodomor Victims Memorial’" dated 08.08.2019 № 625, the official name of the museum was changed in the following version – the National Holodomor-Genocide Museum.
The need for renaming appeared during the reconstruction of the first part and the construction of the second part of the museum, since the name of the institution should reflect its main essence and content of the work.
On July 22, 2019, a public discussion of the title change (renaming) of the National Museum “Holodomor Victims Memorial” took place at the National Museum “Holodomor Victims Memorial.” The variant proposed by the National Historic Memory NGO, the National Museum of the Holodomor-Genocide, was taken as a basis.
During the month – from May 20 to June 20, 2019 – the museum collected suggestions and comments from the public. The renaming was supported by the Association of Holodomor Researchers in Ukraine, the Vasyl Stus All-Ukrainian Human Rights Organization “Memorial,” the International Foundation for the Development of Holodomor Victims Memorial, the Committee on Commemoration of the Victims of the Holodomor-Genocide of 1932–1933, and the Holodomor Research Institute.
Therefore, the museum applied to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine as a state body which should take into account the proposals of the public and complete the process of title change (renaming) according to the procedure.
The new name is the National Holodomor-Genocide Museum. It focuses on the genocidal nature of the crime against Ukrainians and reflects the main activities of the museum.
