On Sunday, March 11, 2018, a feast liturgy dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine was held in the capital of Spain, according to the Facebook page of the Ukrainian Embassy in Spain.

To commemorate the victims of the 1932-1933 Holodomor in Ukraine on March 11, 2018, the Archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal Carlos Osboro Sierra, who was assisted by the priests of the Roman Catholic Church, the parish of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic parish of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Madride, Ivan Lipka and other priests of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, made the Holy Eucharist at the Cathedral of Almuden, the Archdiocese of Madrid.

The divine service was accompanied by singing of the Ukrainian choir of the parish of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin. Event was also attended by representatives of the Ukrainian diplomatic corps in Spain and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate, numerous representatives of the Ukrainian community from all over Spain.

In his speech to the participants, Cardinal Carlos Osboro Sierra expressed his support to the Ukrainians in Spain, noting the unity of the Ukrainian community. He also stressed that the Holodomor should be considered a crime of genocide of the Ukrainian people, which should never be repeated.

Ambassador of Ukraine in Spain, Anatoly Shcherba, in his speech thanked Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra and all those present for honoring the memory of millions of Ukrainians who were victims of the Holodomor, and also expressed the words of support and solidarity to the Spanish people in connection with the anniversary of the death of civilians as a result of a terrorist attack on the Atocha railway station in Madrid on March 11, 2004.

We remind that in 2007 a resolution on the recognition of the Holodomor as genocide was introduced to the lower house of the Spanish Parliament. However, on the initiative of the faction of the ruling Spanish Socialist Labor Party, the provision on the recognition of the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people was excluded from the draft proposal. At the regional level in Spain, the Holodomor was recognized as a genocide by the Basque Country and Catalonia.
