On June 26, 2019, the employees of the National Museum “Holodomor Victims Memorial” participated in the Conference "Museum Open to Everyone. Culture without Limitations.” The topics of discussion were the forms of work of museums and cultural institutions of Ukraine with visually impaired visitors. The event was organized by the Charity Fund "Mystetskyi Arsenal."
The conference participants shared their experience of implementing inclusive projects and working with blind and visually impaired visitors. Ruslan Rubel, technical director of the Residential Center "Ukraine without Barriers,” which the Holodomor Victims Memorial collaborates with in order to create the information signs for the blind, introduced the conference participants to the latest technologies in the field of tiflography and the possibilities of using them in museum work.
Oksana Potimko, Head of the Resource Center for Educational Informational Technologies for Persons with Special Needs at Lviv Polytechnic National University, spoke on how to make the museum more accessible to people with severe visual impairment.
At the end of the conference, the participants took part in the training on communication with people with disabilities in the framework of the project "Inclusive Friendly" (“Vidchui” NGO).
The issue of working with visitors with disabilities is not raised for the first time by the employees of the Memorial. For example, for the visitors with hearing impairments, the documentaries with sign language are broadcasted in the Museum's Hall of Remembrance.
Also, the work on information signs for the visitors of the exhibition and the territory of the Memorial in Ukrainian, English and Braille, as well as cooperation with the Assembly of Persons with Disabilities in Ukraine regarding the audio description of museum excursions, is continuing.
